A Family Vinaigrette

Oil and vinegar don't mix.  You can shake it up, but it quickly separates.  The oil ends up floating on the surface of the vinegar.  Why?  Because oil and vinegar have totally different properties.  Vinegar is mostly composed of water, and oil can't make a uniform solution with water.  Simple yes, frustrating if you are trying to mix them.
People are a lot like oil and vinegar.  Two people can be exactly like oil and vinegar.  Great on their own, but together, they don't do well.  In order to be a cohesive union, it needs an emulsifier to bind the two liquids together into one smooth liquid.
Family members, co-workers, even spouses can be like oil and vinegar.  Alone, they are wonderful people, but together, they are not a good match.   They need an emulsifier, or an arbitrator to help buffer each others strong personality traits.
In my family, I am an emulsifier.  I do my best to keep others from fighting and arguing, and trying to push their opinion on each other.  Let me say, it is a stressful position to be in.  After a while, you get physically and mentally exhausted trying to keep the peace.
Families, especially, are an intricate balance of yin and yang, a dynamic of a group of people living together in peace.   Anger, frustration, compromise, happiness, joy, all make up a family unit.  Being a member of a family can be a beautiful, with touching moments, everyday mundane duties, or downright challenging.  Family should be your sanctuary, your respite, a safe place to fall, but in all honesty,  that isn't always the norm.
My family, I love them all with all my heart,  each one a strong individual with good and bad personality traits.   They can be each others best advocate or worst nightmare.  They will protect one another, but not think twice about chastising them either.  They are my family.
