Wake Up and Smell the Coffee

Awe  coffee , there is nothing like that hot, rich, aromatic blend of delishousness in a mug to get your engine going in the morning.  I hear the Folgers commercial in my head and I sing their jingle, the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!  Catchy, easy to remember and so true!
Some like it black, some prefer it with cream, or sugar, I like it with both.  In Canada, we call that a double double.  It doesn't matter how it is consumed, hot, tepid, or over ice, it is always available in some form to wake you up, settle your nerves or just to help you relax over the newspaper.
Recently, I read an online poll that claimed coffee had been knocked off its morning pedestal and no longer reined supreme as our morning choice of beverage.  Apparently, with the popularity of juicing and yogurt smoothies, coffee was now tied with tea as number 3 for our favourite beverage.  Who the heck did they question for this poll?  These statistics couldn't possibly be correct,  they must have been outside a Juice Bar or Health Club for these numbers! They should have been standing at the door of any Coffee house!
I checked out Nielsens Ratings , and in the year 2012, Canadians spent 1 billion dollars on their daily cup of Joe!   That definately sounded more believable.  You only need to walk past a Tim Hortons or Starbucks in the morning to know that Canadians love their coffee.  These are 4 years old statistics so I believe the numbers have grown exponentially with each year.
I am not a coffee connoisseur,  however I do know what I, myself enjoy.  I know people who are discerning in their coffee tastes as well as knowledge, and they close their eyes when they talk about it, like they are discussing a lover!   These people have a French Press, Cappuccino machine, even Espresso machine, all for that ever perfect cup of coffee.  I have a Keurig because it is fast but mostly because it was on sale.
Coffee is something you love or you hate.  There are no in betweens in this flavor realm.   In recent years however, the trend in coffee, thanks to the yuppies, has moved in a different direction.   Years ago you would order coffee and the choices were limited to black, or cream, or a combination.  Now, if you step into a  Coffee House, it takes 10 minutes just to read the menu, due to all of the flavor choices.    Coffee has morphed into Lattes, Mochas, Machiattos, Cappuccinos, Frappuccinos, and more too numerous to mention and those don't include each individual flavor, not to mention each type is available in no fat, half fat, full fat, or even soy blends!
Coffee isn't the same old cup it used to be.  Now, it's a gourmet, billion dollar industry tailored to a younger crowd with money to spend.
Coffee will continue to be my go to morning drink because I enjoy it, nothing fancy, just hot and tasty, in a paper cup or china cup, it doesn't matter.
Coffee, pour and enjoy, it doesn't get any better than that.
