The Firsts of the Season

Today is the first day back to school in our area.  A first for many.  For my granddaughter,  the first day of Senior Kindergarten, for some, it's the first day of high school, college or university.
Regardless, first days of anything are always important.   They are a chance to build a sturdy foundation for the year, one that won't crumble as the year goes on.
My school years are way behind me, but at this time of year, I feel excited and renewed.  The days are getting cooler, well, not yet but they will be.  Trees will transform themselves into bouquets of coloured leaves.  Crimsons,  golds, and, oranges,  will soon cover the ground, painting our neighbourhoods in a vast array of colour.  Apples are on the trees, waiting to be picked, and eaten.  Pumpkins growing in the field will soon be turning bright orange, sitting patiently to be turned into a sumptuous Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, or a scary Jack-o-Lantern.  The scents and sights of autumn will soon be all around us.
I always go through the house and give it a good cleaning at the change of every season.  Pulling furniture out, washing windows and curtains, getting all if the previous seasons dirt washed off to begin a fresh new season.
I find this time of year energizing, full of hope for the year ahead.  The new year officially doesn't begin until midnight January 1, but to me, the new year starts the day after Labour Day.
Parents everywhere will be cheering and celebrating as their children start their school year, the kids, not so much!  Teachers, some are enthusiastic about their new year ahead with fresh faces, others will dread the drudgery of it all.
I, myself love the fall, others hate it.  I can never understand that.  Who can hate all the magestic splendor of this season?
Apple pies, casseroles, hearty soups, warm fuzzy sweaters, snuggling in front of a crackling fire, so many firsts of the season to look forward to!
After, I rid my garden of the weeds that have yet again become a mass of jungle undergrowth, I will plant colourful bulbs for next spring.  Tulips, hyacinth, amd daffodils, all of these, will be nestled under the ground, if the squirrels don't get them first, just waiting to pop their heads up in the first warm days of spring.
Fall fairs, drives to the beach, sitting by a raging bonfire, watching the sun set, listening to the waves, looking at the stars!  Hay rides, long walks along tree lined paths, picking up coloured leaves, especially with a child, and seeing it through their eyes.  Great big, orange harvest moons, lighting up the night sky, dew, turning into frost,  cool, crisp breezes chasing away hot, humid air, wonderful!   Soft flannel sheets on the bed, to snuggle into while you sleep, pots of purple, yellow and burgundy mums sitting on front porches, to welcome your guests as they walk up to your door.
Scarecrows, pumpkins and gourds, decorating your outside as well as inside, the heady scent of a cinnamon candle burning, all harbingers of autumn.
All of these seasonal joys, these firsts of the fall season, I love, and look forward to.
Here's to all of the firsts of the season, I pray they bring you all of the blessings fall has to offer.  Cheers!
